I know that the horsepower changed after 86 and the APC boxes in 87 and up boosted up to 12.7 psi where-as the 85 and 86 SPG only got to 10.4 psi or somthing like that. I dont think it was the circutry that changed in the later boxes, I think it was just a resistance setting.
I have a standard APC from my 86 SPG in right now and a while back I got an 87 SPG box off ebay. the 87 box supported a little bit more boost than the 86 box. I ended up tweaking the 87 box and switching the resistors to a red box spec, so I guess I will never know for sure. But as for your answer, I think that 87 and up were the better ones, for boost psi anyway.
