that might cause the play and excessive wear. Just 'might', you know. But, first things first. Instead of the special tool you can use a 90 degree circlip pliers, available at any hardware store. Maybe you have to shave it down a little bit to fit.
The rotor is usually held in place by two torx screws. They are not really necessary, so sometimes they are just left out on installing. Then the rotor feels loose if you have the wheel off. If you take the brake caliper off (two 19 mm bolts usually tight as h.ll - use a good, expensive tight-fitting six-sided socket and a large bar to break them loose) and the rotor is not fastened by these two screws, it'll just come off.
If you've come this far, you can feel for play in the bearing.
In my experience it has happened to me once that the brake material came off a new pad. It just fell off and I had metal on metal.
BTW I had new rotors and pads too not too long ago and -guess what- my right side is wearing much faster than the left and the rotor is showing bad signs of wear. It just happens, you know.
