If it does'nt even turn over the engine, then the problem is not in the ignition system (ie spark plugs, ignition module, etc). Most likely, the battery is so low on power that it will not turn the engine over, but will provide enough poewr for dash lights. Often when an alternator goes bad while you're dirving the car, the battery will slowly get drained without you noticing, and when you come to a stop light, the idle goes way down and at the same time youre pushing on the brakes which lights up all the brake lights taking additional power. This causes the engine to stall, and when you try and restart the engine, of course there is on power.
I would try jump starting the car and see if that starts it. Then use a voltmeter to see if the system is getting charged.
