Turn on the headlights. With someone watching, turn key to start. If the headlights do more than just dim a little, then you've probably got a bad battery. A battery with one dead cell will give you some lighting, but will not power the lights under a load. This could also suck enough voltage off of a jump start so that the starter won't turn. The fact that the radio asked for a code says it lost all power for a second or more. This could also be a very corroded battery cable, either at the battery or at the other end or either cable. Check all the connections and try a different battery before looking for a major catastrophy.
