I think that your idea is probably the best one. When an alignment shop broke an upper control arm bolt, I ended up drilling the stub out and running a longer bolt of the same threading back through the drilled-out hole.
You can look in through the "tower" in front of the shocks and see the ends of the bolts. They're pretty easy to get at.
