When removing the control arms, make sure you put spacers in under the top control arms to hold the pressure of the coil springs. Then you can safety remove the lower control arms. Those 5 or 6 bolts that hold the lower control arm on can be tough to get off. You may need quite a bit of leverage. I did. While you're down there you might as well check the lower control arms for cracking as this is an occasional problem, youve probably heard about that. I replaced mine with Scanwest ones. As for the skidplate and crossmember, I've never replaced them myself or taken them off but I think as long as you have the car on jackstands (well positioned too) and you have the coil springs under control, it will be safe. The crossmembers dont hold any weight or anything.
