It appears/smells to me to be a soap, perhaps made from biodiesel biproduct. But it seems to have many who find that it works. Such are not needed when an engine have had a good oil change history with good oil. But when things are a mess, it worth trying a chemical overhaul. There are solvent type products which are cheap. Tearimg down an engine is not cheap.

A good engine with stuck rings can be a smoker. I have seem a really bad smoking engine treated chemically which then stops smoking and continues to provide years of service.

I don't buy the argument about changing filters... if the mess is liquified, a filter is not going to trap it. Perhaps the filter is needed and the mess comes off in chucks and lumps.

It is not very fluid at room temps or cool, in the bottle, fine once dispersed in oil. If you microwave it for a few seconds it warms up quick and and gets fluid. Which suggests its ionic or polarized properties.

5 minutes later...

OK, just got some from the garage and put it on my hands and with warm water it acts like a soap. Rinsed and dried, smeared some butter on my hands and rubbed it in. Some AutoRX and warm water and washes up just great. So by some defintion is is a soap and has the microwave properties to suit.

The odor suggest animal fats to me. And also a glycerine soap. After the above it smells, after then washing with real soap, my hands still stink of a crude soap.

When fats are esterized, such as making biodiesel from vegy oil, there is a fraction of crude glycerine produced that is brown and ugly like AutoRX. But folks make soap from that and it can't be this smelly! So perhaps AutoRX is made from some animal fax components or from yellow grease or rendered animal fat. But again, it does not matter if it works. But perhaps the price does not reflect the cost structure of the source materials. Again it might work well. And if it does, great. But I have seen some nasty marketing material for this product which was less than ethical. But fortunately they dropped that. But if the profits are obscene, lots of hype is required even if a product works as described.

And the diesel folks who use and/or brew their own from soy oil, find that biodiesel cleans up intake manifolds that are fouling from exhaust gas recirc soot that forms an asphault like deposit with oil coming through the from the PCV via the turbo and IC. So that is interesting too! You cannot use plain vege oil in a desiel for very long... it needs to be chmically modified. You cook it with a solution of methyl alchohol and lye, then separate it from the glycerine. Glycerine is itself water misible (sp?)...

Bio desiel has a higher cetane level than dyno derived. And it produces less soot and engines run smoother on it too. But with low levels of production and no pipeline distribution, its more expensive. 20% bio diesel is popular and know as B20. BioD is also 0% sulfur. BioD production has a positive energy balance. The ethanol used to polute gasoline takes more energyy to produce than its energy of combustion, but it does buy farm votes.... what a pack of crap.

Yes, I have spent too much time reading such, and I do also have a Diesel Passat. No I don't cook BioD (or BD) on my patio!
