Not too hard. Just unplug the wires from the speakers and pull the shelf out. Although to be honest, I have only had the shelf out once; to carry a set of four tires to the tire shop. I have my old Trooper for big stuff. But it is still easy enough if I ever need to remove it. The quick-connect plugs you mentioned are a great idea. I may just wire some in.
