They're not so bad once you get them sorted out, but my last and current 900 is an 87 900T that I bought at 130K in April of 92 so maybe my comments will resonate.
.The car only required a couple hundred dollars to pass MD inspection, like new brake pads in the rear and replace the turn signal switch.
.Within a few months, however, it was new engine mounts, ball joints, a front CV joint, radiator, new automatic transmission fluid lines (there are four of them to a $%@#$ thermostat and they're each $120 10 years ago-although now the thermostat is not replaced, just bypassed!), new transmission cover plates (updated, no leaks).
. By 192K I chose to replace the transmission and rebuild the engine at the same time (best time to do it, engine out, at least labor saved)...wow wotta difference. Trouble is it cost about $4400 or approx what I paid for the car....no trouble since and I'm around 260K.
The sign of the bad transmission in my case was poor movement when cold...car would move at first but immediately lose motion, couldn't climb a hill until the trans warmed up. There are other signs you may see like burned transmission fluid or bad shifting.
Since then I've also replaced/reskinned the front seats, replaced the radiator, replaced the oil cooler fluid lines (another $120 each, but you might be able to beat that by going to an airquipt dealership with the removed OEM hoses and adapingt aeroquipt line to the OEM ends...you DO need the OEM ends!), replaced all the brake lines with stainless steel braided teflon line hoses, upgraded GP6 apc controller and AID vacuum/pressure retard unit and larger injectors, new/used turbocharger, repaired a rust perforation in the spare wheel compartment holed through to the left rear wheel (a common spot), replaced both front fenders (more rust) and the hood (rusted internally), redid the headliner and the sunroof headliner, replaced the @#$%@#$% Clarion head unit and all the factory speakers, plus several replacements of A/C hoses and a new condenser (still using R12 thankyouverymuch!)...well, you get the gist.
I'd look very closely at this 130K 900T with an automatic if you're goal is to have your daughter drive it as a reliable car,,,reliable it ain't without a lot of TLC and constant monitoring.
You'd be a lot better off with a used 94 Taurus station wagon, for example...I saw one with less than 100K and it went for about $1750 on Route 28 South of Olney, MD betwee MD97 GA avenue and Layhill road. Parts are cheaper and the car has an airbag, well, there you are.
