The noise you get in neutral with the clutch pedal out is probably the primary chains. The other noises may be related to a worn pinion bearing or to otuer worn bearings or gears in the transmission. The transmission in my '89 SPG is noisy on decel in 3rd and 4th too.
I think that the longevity of the pinion bearing is more a matter of how the car has been maintained and driven (along with the luck of the draw as to whether the original assembler tightened the locknut to the optimal torque on the bearing) than the size of the bearing - the large ones fail, too.
There are a few people wh swear by pulling the transmission from the bottom. Below is a link to the FAQ for the procedure. There's one bolt in the back that I can barely get off with the whole assembly out of the car.
I'm a bit more comfortable with pulling the whole engine/trans assembly, but that's just me.
