The shims that sit between the trans and the inner driver should remain the same if you swap drivers. No matter what. The shims stay with the trans. I just want to say this, because I once lost a shim and a trans with it.
About the cups: I only know for sure that the inner drivers changed in size somewhere around 1986, but that was the inner size. They changed the tripod bearing size, enlarging the tripods from 32 to 38 mm (I think) thus causing the drivers to be bigger. A post -86 driveshaft does not fit into a pre -86 driver, as I found out in the middle of the night.
Well, just wanted to share the shim thing with you. Good luck!
