9000's are safer, faster, and can carry more when compared to the pre 1994 900 models. They also cost quite a bit more to buy when initially produced (but were cheaper to manufacture - the 900 chassis is really a 1960's design with modern improvements (16v, airbag, abs) shoehorned in. There are only a few mechanical differences between the two cars' engines - mainly the improvements the 2.3 L has (direct ignition, trionic, a reliable transmission) when compared to the older, less powerful 2.0 motor. My ('88) 900 S has been far more expensive to maintain (5speed transmission failed last summer) than the old ('87) 9kT.
That "not a true saab" bit is just a load of horse manure. If its sold by Saab it certainly is a "saab". People have said that the ng900 (saab 900 models from 94-98) are less desirable than the 9000's - having owned neither I'm not really able to intelligently comment. None-the-less a new loaded 9kT cost ~10-15k more than a new loaded ng900 of the same year. That must mean something.
