Well, I know which VW wiper relay NOT to use...

Heh heh,
I thought I had the correct relay from a mid-90s VW to pop in my '84 900S in order to get the variable-delay windshild wipers. Alas, I didn't get the right relay. No big deal, though.
I tried the relay but it was a simple fixed-interval relay after all. I didn't hurt anything, thank goodness.
The "wrong" VW relay is part # 1HM 955 531 C. Also, on it's top side, is stamped "196" in HUGE numbers.
So, if you're digging though the the junkyard and come across this relay, don't bother with it--it acts just like the stock SAAB wiper relay, except you only get one wipe when you use the windshield washers (which isn't enough, in my opinion).
Just thought somebody this info could help someone out...
As for me, I think I'll keep trying to get one of the VW relays Fred mentioned a couple years ago on this board, linked below. (The reason I tried the above relay was that it shared the last six digits of the part number which Fred listed.) Moral of the story is: if the numbers don't match, it ain't the same!
