Brew, the bypass valve sends air from the throttle plate back to the intake side of the turbo. You should not be able to hear it's opperation from inside the car. A blowoff valve is a solution for the same problem, but instead of recirculating the air it simply vents it to the atmosphere. I just replaced the valve on my car. It sits right next to the intake side of the turbo on the motor side. To get at it I removed the hard plastic intake pipe between the AMM and the Turbo. the valve is connected to the rubber elbow that connects the plastic pipe to the turbo. You will also need to remove the lines to the apc solonoid and egr valve from that plastic pipe. The whole job took me about a half an hour. It doesn't sound like you need a replacement, but if you get one make sure you get the upgraded bosch 2psi valve or an aftermarket unit rated to high pressure.
