I ran out of time and space. Actually there's probably a dozen different approaches which I won't try to cover. Ultimately the way to convince a spouse to do something they aren't inclined to go alone with is to involve them. Make them an insider rather than the outsider who says "no." See if you can articulate why you really want a classic Saab (or Porsche for that matter)rather than trying to sell it as a transportation solution--something that might be a stretch even for my powers of persuasion. Take her to a Saab rally. Bring her and the kid(s)along to look at cars, pack a picnic lunch and maybe stop someplace interesting on the way. Make Saabing into a family thing. I'm not just blowing smoke, some of the things I've convinced my wife to let me do are: get a pilots license, buy two different airplanes, sell our house--buy a 42 foot trawler and live on it for a year, after that we sold the trawler, bought a motorhome and traveled around the country for a year. We're not rich and did most of this on a shoestring. But the key to it was explaining the rationale for wanting to do this, and making her an intregal part of it--she had veto power at any point alone the way. And it wasn't just a cynical ploy to get my way--I liked involving her and it made us better as a couple. Make your wife a part of it and she might just help you acheive your goal instead of throwing cold water on it.
