I'm still trying to trace the source of my cold start problem-- terminal flooding at temps <30 degr F. Clean plugs, dry cylinders, warm car, always starts. At low temps runs great once started (requires warm engine).
New battery, starter, distr cap, rotor, plugs (good spark on crank).
Replaced coolant temp sensor, new one has resistances as per Bentley at sensor leads and at LH (2.4) control unit.
New (refurb) AMM, no diff except in my wallet.
I schmoozed a Saab mechanic who said he had seen similar sympoms as a result of a defective crank position sensor. However, Bentley indicates that the cps is present only on '89 and later models. It's behind the crank shaft pulley, deep in the bowels of the beast so I haven't looked for same on my '88.
Is the Hall sensor equivalent to cps? If so, and even if not, can someone please guide me on how to test operating voltages delivered to the EZK? I've rolled-back the rubber boot as suggested but cannot get the female contact assembly to disengage from the molded plastic housing; I pulled the weatherstripping gasket and looked for a seam that might yield to gentle persuasion but it won't release. Am I missing something?
Finally, are there other possible culprits? It seems to me that an ignition timing fault on initial crank could produce flooding condition, but great performance on warm start would seem to argue against...
Ignition coil/ amplifier? I see good spark on crank, nice and blue, but I have no way of knowing if it is actually sufficient.
I'd feel SO much better if I could make this problem go away, any and all help/suggestions greatly appreciated.
