Your 88 have the Hall effect system in the ignition distributor. The CKP sensor was introduced in 89-90 (located behind crank pulley).
I don't see that a faulty Hall effect would create your problems since when that one goes bad it kills both spark and fuel pump.
It would be interesting to know the opening time of injectors when problem occurs. For that you need a lab scope though.
On a normal warm engine idling, you have about 3ms of opening time on injectors, at full throttle acceleration it can get up to 11ms.
If you have more than 11ms at cranking something is telling the ECU wrong data, OR the ECU might be at fault.
For a trained eye it can be enough to plug a noid lite into the wire harness for one of the injectors and study the amount of on/off blinking while cranking. That way one can see if the noid lite is on too much in regards to a normal engine.
It still doesn't pin point the problem but gives some leads.
