I've had a car stolen once and it was stripped to the bone. I had the "best" alarm at that time. I had the battery installed in the trunk with a locked cover so would-be thieves would have to spend more time to get into it. I had a cut off switch to the fuel pump. Plus the car was so modified that it was a bitch to keep idleing when cold. They still got it!
The viper in my garage has an alarm that has 2 phases. You need a fob to get it started. If this is bypassed, there is a secondary system that will shut down the car with 2 minutes and blow a fuse that is not the type that can be replaced in a jiffy. In order to bypass this you have to press another fob (no numbers) in the right sequence. This secondary system is hidden and not part of the other system. It's a bitch to get use to. Total over kill for a saab, but these systems are out there. But if they really want the viper, I'm sure they can steel it. One of the best security features out there is a few stickers that tells would-be thieves that this car is alarmed; a red blinking led, and most of all a pedal jack. The pedal jack is one of the hardest to bypass. Pulling lock out which is almost impossible to get to is a bitch and renders it useless. You can not bypass it by pulling lock out. The only real way to take it off is w\a battery powered grinder which will wake the dead. I park in a crappy neighborhood where I work with no probs.
I will also tell you this, I have seen "black boxes" in operation and they will open almost any alarm system in minutes. I have also witnessed "black boxes" that can open almost any garage door as well. Pretty scary how easy it is to steal a car. My advice is to do what makes you the most comfortable at night. There is no substitute for metal. Electronics are meant to be bypassed.
P.S. There are a few pedal jacks out there, do research, some are crap. Also, on my porsche that is setup for auto-x and more, I have a removable steering wheel. It has a one of a kind hub that fits only that steering wheel.
Good luck! Your lucky that all they wanted to do was joy ride.
