DIY shift coupler: hints/tips?

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but how 'bout that coupler? I've searched the board a few times on this subject, but I still have a couple of questions.
I gather that this job is best done from below. One reaches up and, somewhat blindly, removes the drift pin from the trans side of the coupler; does the pin need to be driven out in an upward or downward direction? What tool works best for this, esp given the space limitations?
I've seen the special 3rd gear locating tool on Quasi's site, but how can that be helpful? It locates 3rd, but doesn't one then have to remove the tool to slide the coupling over the rod, thereby allowing mis-alignment? Or is that a non-issue?
I plan on taking this job on over the weekend, and I deeply appreciate any help. I've always that the people of this board makes owning a Saab so much more pleasureable.
