alignment shop says I need a new outer tie rod

I put in a new rack and lowering springs, and do the alignment 'myself.' After some tire wear, I decide to take it to an alignment shop.
I leave the car at the alignment shop. They call and say the outer tie rod is stripped and the nut is just spinning, and the outer tie rod needs to be replaced. The estimate goes from "about $75 for the alignment" to "about $240" to include replacement of the outer tie rod.
I decide to just pick it up and not get it fixed or aligned. Back at the dorm parking lot, I turn the wheel all the way so I can inspect the tie rod. The inner/outer tie rod junction (where the inner-tie screws into the outer-tie with a pipe wrench) is still in nice condition, with loctite. It obviously hadn't been touched or loosened. I don't see any stripped threads or loose nuts ANYWHERE.
I'm so frustrated. I just wanted the damn alignment done. I don't even know if they were trying to rip me off. Ugh.
