Rob, I was just in the same exact situation at Tire Kingdom last week. There is probably nothing wrong with your tie rods, it is supposed to spin inside the shaft alittle. Just call an independent SAAB shop to verify this. You can call SAAB Services in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. @ (954) 763-1496 and ask for John, and tell him your situation, he has a wealth of knowledge regarding classic 900's. If you have your own shop then check to see if they do alignments, if not, then get a recommendation from them as to who they send their customers to. That is what I did and it worked perfect. I had just purchased 4 Michelin HydroEdge tires w/ road hazzard, wheel balance, and alignment at Tire Kingdom. When my car was on the alignment rack, the manager tells me to come and take a look under my car. He proceeds to try and turn the nut. The nut spinned along with the rod spinning at the same time in the shaft, for that reason I was told that both tie rod ends were bad and in need of being replaced. He told me that he could not give me an alignment with my tie rods in this condition and would gladly refund the portion for the alignment. I told the manager to hold off while I took my car back to the indy SAAB shop for their opinion. The next day I took my car back to the indy SAAB shop and they put it on the rack to check things out, there was nothing wrong with my tie rods. They told me that I was about to be "taken for a ride." Those shops like Tire kingdom are trained to "up sell" everything without correctly having much mechanical knowledge outside of tires. The manager at Tire Kingdom had to refund my money for the alignment and did not make the sale on the tie rods that he'd hoped for. It just so happened that I had the time to go back and forth to those shops, maybe you do not, but at the cost of what I'd just paid for those 4 brand new Michelin's I could not afford to be taken for an additional $250.00 for unnecessary parts & labor and/or run the risk of not having a proper alignment done at SAAB c900 spec's. Hope this will reach you in time.
Good luck!
