No need to take it out of gear.
The bearing seat (that's what the EPC calls it) is usually held into the case pretty tightly by the O-ring seal. I was lucky enough to find the special SAAB tool that attaches to a slide hammer, so it can be pulled straight out. But, if you don't have that, you need to pry it out with a big screwdriver or small crowbar, bit by bit, all around the perimeter of the bearing seat. When you pry, be careful to not tear any shims. Some of them are quite thin.
The transmission case is pretty hearty, I wouldn't worry about damaging it, but you may want to use the normal care around the surfaces between the case and the bearing seat. You should also see 2 notches in the bearing seat that you can use to get your prying tool into.
The O-ring seal in the bearing seat makes it a tight fit, so there's some resistance to having it just pull out by hand.
Knowing how I am when I get into one of these projects, I double check to be sure that I have all of the fasteners out. (BTDT, with some unhappy results when I missed a removing bolt.)
