There was a time a few years ago when I had the youngest daughter's '83 Toyota Aisan-Warner 4 speed automatic sitting on one side of the garage stall (while I overhauled and hopped up the motor) and the middle daughter's '90 SAAB 900 automatic on the other (getting a new torque-convertor and major clean out, etc.) on the other side, and I spent many moments measuring and meditating on how I could get that 4-speed gearset into the SAAB case, but the combination of difficulties connecting the gearset output shaft to the pinion bearing shaft with adequate support (basically a whole new shaft would need to be machined to replace both) and anticipated complications making the connections from the oil pump drive secure and dependable (the major weak point in the SAAB design led me to conclude that I couldn't do it, even if I was a millionaire and a NASA quality machinist at the same time. I also meditated on changing the chain drive sprocket ratioes, but there isn't enough room to really make a big enough difference.
