Silicon doesn't create the leak, bad gasket do.
Valve cover gaskets are a wear and tear item and usually last about 40-60K miles depending on how many miles you put on the car per year.
Age kills the gasket quicker than miles, it gets hard and brittle.
Silicon works good but you don't have to glob it on. A tiny bead at the bottom of valve cover keeps the gasket in place and helps seal the voids.
If silicon is squeezed out when cover is tighten down, it's too much.
It also comes in handy to have a $3000 parts washer to clean the valve cover to get rid of excessive silicon and old oil deposits before putting it back together.
From about 97-98 Saab have been using a REALLY strong glue to fix the gasket to valve cover. When removing the old gasket it splits in half and you need to scrape the gasket loose from valve cover, that's a pain and a half.
Happy Saabing
