I got my valve cover gasket from Sobstory and asked his advice, plus I searched the archives. The job was a snap. Thanks for all of your tips on the BB.

I found why it was leaking. As stated in the posts, silicone will eventually allow leaks. Well, Bonehead McMoron, the previous mechanic globbed that stuff on there. It came off the head pretty easy, but I spent 45 mins or an hour cleaning up the valve cover with a wire brush and paper towels.

Here are the tips I got from the BB. Now they're all in one place the next guy.

Get the right gaskets. Sobstory will hook you up.

Take them out and lay them out flat for a few days. they will return to the right shape. This way your're not fighting with the gasket jumping out of its channel... (Thanks Jim!!!)

Put the gaskets in the channels, then tie each screwhole with some thread. This keeps the gaskets in place nicely. (Thanks ChrisX!!!) Once it's down you can just yank the thread out. This allowed me to do the job "dry". I had some grease as a backup method, but didn't need it.

1. Tighten up the 16 bolts to finger tight with a socket and extension (no ratchet). Start on the inside, then do the outside. Repeat.
2. Add rachet, tighten the bolts pinky tight, starting inside. Repeat.
4. Tighten to the correct torque, inside to outside.
5. One more time around to check torques.

Start car.
Notice no leaks. (optional - drink a beer)
Clean up, go inside, and begin painting the 2nd bathroom...
Take wife to dinner.

Thanks again!
Randy
