Does the 900 have valve stem seals? If so these can also cause an oil burning problem if they deteriorate. (Common problem on AMC and other domestic US engines.) As I recall, oil burning through the valve guides is normally worst at idle and decreases when you accelerate.
I've also seen problems when cars sit around for a while as the rings may get stuck from gum and varnish. This kind of problem can "fix itself" after driving for a while. I once had a '64 Rambler Ambassador like that. The car had sat around unused for several years before I got it, and its 327 V8 poured blue smoke out of the exhaust like crazy when started. (I got the car cheap because it needed an "engine overhaul.") The smoking disappeared after a while as the car was driven around and I never had another smoke problem with it. I may have used Rislone or something similar to help free up the rings.
