I would counsel optimism and do the simple things first, ala Baab. My wife's daily driver, a '90 Grand Am with a 2.5l "Iron Duke" engine began consuming oil at a surprising rate-- surprising especially since it wasn't blowing an obvious blue cloud. When I finally bit the bullet and cracked the hood (I just don't like the car) the first clue was oil seepage around the air cleaner cover bolts. I removed the cover to find an air filter positively soaked with oil.
Blow-by as a consequence of worn rings was the worst case scenario, a defective PCV valve was best case. I shook the PCV and it rattled appropriately, but I've heard that is not as diagnostic for function as widely assumed and replaced it (besides, it's cheap). I changed the (filthy!) oil and filter, and then added about a cup of Sea Foam "mechanic-in-a-can". Left breather tube unattached to air cleaner to avoid fouling new air filter and mucking-up carb. Don't know if it's related, but also replaced the thermostat, as the car had not been getting up to operating temp as per gauge and heater was not doing much good on cold Wisconsin drives.
First 40 miles I was that guy we all swear at, driving down the road leaving a plume of smoke behind. Covered my face and felt generally bad, resigned to shopping for new wife-ride, and suddenly I noticed that it no longer blew smoke; it ran better-- it actually had pickup, and sounded better (still a bit diesel-ly, but sufferable).
Bottom line, car is back in service, wife thinks (however misguided) that I actually know what I'm doing, and the repair only ran ~ $50 plus minimal time.
Just my experience... GL
