I have had some similar problems to what you're describing and unless you know exactly what was recently done to the car before you bought it, this is what i would do. I started with the cheaper routine maintenance possibilites first since it's always a good idea either way. New plugs, cap, and rotor are probably one of the cheapest and best things you could do. And while you're at it, it's worth checking your wires to make sure they're in good shape. One day i was driving my car and it all of a sudden died and would barely start. Thankfully I was close to home and was able to limp it back. It ended up being a couple of bad plug wires causing my woes. The fuel filter is also a nice cheap part that if it hasn't been replaced in quite a while, would be a good thing to change out. If none of this works, I would move on to more complex fixes such as vacuum lines, aic, and so on. And at least with doing the basics and making sure they're right you know you have a good base to start everything else with.
