Considering there's a length difference between pre and post 87 (after the vented rotor design) inner drivers, I'm wondering which driver you have? For instance, I know the axles on a 1982 and 1991 are the same length, but have different spline diameters at the tripod end beginning in 88. Because of the vented upgrade brakes and the steering knuckle/hub design, a longer inner driver makes up the difference. As far as what length difference, I'll guess somewhere around 10 mm. I'd also check your suspension bushings. When they begin to go, they provide additional flex in every direction, perhaps enough to cause the axle tripod from popping free of the inner driver at select moments of extreme stress - like a fast right hand turn with an added dip in the road.
