No warning, no prior noises, just an odometer that said it had approx 250K miles on it. I was cruising up a 2 mile hill I cruise up in 4th every day. The car suddenly began to feel as though it was pulling a trailor. I had to downshift. Still the same feel, had to downshift again. I managed to get within 100 yards of the peak of the hill which would have allowed me to coast the nearly three miles to my street when it (82 2L 8V T) just died. I was lucky to have been able to pull over into a safe spot as traffic zoomed by. The only thing that suggested an internal engine problem while trying to drive was a periodic high pitched whine. Then when I tried to restart after giving it a rest, it would only slowly turn over as if a discharged battery, accompanied by metalic squeeling sounds. The crankcase was full of oil, and the oil pressure was fine (as per the dash mounted VDO oil pressure guage). Just a day before I had completed a 250 mile round trip without any sign of trouble. It just gave up when it gave up. No rythmic slapping sounds suggesting a worn main bearing.

So plans are already under wayf to transplant a new (good used) 16V T into this classic 900 body. I'm actually excited about it. To make the transplant easy and get back on the road as soon as possible, I'm going to do the modification which allows you to keep the older CIS fuel system by creating a bracket for the older injection valves to fit into the 16V intake manifold. I do intend, however, to use the 16V APC box. If there's any compatibility problems, I'll just use the older APC box. Over time I'll upgrade to the LH fuel system.

One question I do have is if the older 5 speed tranny will mate up with the 16V block. Reason I even bring it up is I plan to seperate the 8V block from the tranny and keep it on hand for a time until I determine the 16V tranny is sound. The older block I have to get rid of the day I pull it because I have access to a pickup truck for just one day, so all large item (bringing new engine, tossing the bad one) transporting has to be done in one day. Any insights on all the above swapping related issues are welcome.
