Clean out the inner driver cup & check for wear with your finger. Even a slight indentation on the wear surface will cause a vibration.
Your '85 should have the small tripod. The early driver cup has three raised rings around the outer surface. The later version has two rings. Considering the condition of your old tripod bearing, serious consideration should be given to replacement of the driver cup.
Check out the Townsend Import & Twinsaabs sites for some very detailed explanations of the procedure.
Also, the new tripod bearing should have punch marks that identify the small or tapered side of the splines.
I ended up taking my axel to a drive axel shop to have my tripod installed after I did it backwards, duh! how was I to know.
Please post your results,
Kevin
