The finger feel test is a good start to determine the wear in the inside of the inner driver bearing surfaces. As far as vibration goes, whatever vibration you were feeling was no doubt because of the spider bearing having disintigrated. I experienced a bearing failure after a lower A-frame replacement job. I reinserted the axle not realizing that at the last second before insertion back into the inner driver, one of the "pods" slipped off. The subsequent vibration under every condition of acceleration was considerable. You may be able to get away with some evident wear on the inner driver bearing surface without experiencing much vibration. It certainly won't be anywhere near the vibration felt with a bad bearing like you had. Another trick is to swap the inner drivers left to right and right to left. That requires removing the stub axle/ cup unit from each housing by removing the snap ring inside and soft mallet hammering it through the oil seal. Tapping it down against a wood bench surface also does the trick.
