Well, I finally finished my front shock absorber replacement project today on my '87 900T convertible. The new Bilsteins look nice. Can't wait to tackle the rears. Thanks to everyone who wrote and called me with advice. Mr. Dremel and his cut off wheel were the key to my rusty top bolts.
When putting the new fronts in I had the same problem as when I removed the old ones - the nut turned the shaft. No biggie. Since the nut actually turned instead of being rusted to the shaft, I clamped a pair of vice grips on the top of the shaft in order to turn the nut. But oh, it's so tight in there! My open ended wrench was giving me a real hard way to go.
So I broke down and bought something. This is the neatest and most useful tool I think I've ever purchased. Sears has "Gear Wrench" brand ratcheting wrenches on sale. I'm not a big Sears tool fan because I find their prices too high but in this case it was worth it. I got a metric set, but got the kind with the wrench end that actually pivots (URL below). Oh my God this made the job SO much easier!! On the right side it took maybe 30 seconds to crank the nut down tight. On the left side it was an incredible pain because there's no room to work in there, but with the ability to pivot the head I got the wrench at the correct angle so that it was between the vacuum booster and the alternator...I was able to get one or two clicks of the ratchet at a time. It took maybe 5 minutes but was still amazing compared to how difficult it was trying to work with a standard wrench in there. If you have a spare $59 to spend, these wrenches are awesome!
