I have 88 900T, 91 900TC, 99 viggen, and my wife has a 2000 9-5. We picked out the 9-5 together. The 9-5 is very pleasing to both non-saab enthusiasts and Saab enthusiasts alike. She was a Toyota enthusiast who was on her third Celica and wanted something more practical with 4 doors. Ours is a 4cyl which is pleasantly powerful, it's roomy, the seats are very comfy, it's extremely reliable, etc... It's a well built machine.

Sure, it doesn't have the classic looks of a 9000 or c900, but it's 100% modern Saab inside, and the outside grows on me. It handles well, gets good mileage, etc... Prior to the 9-5, my wife was considering a 4runner SUV. The 9-5 has more room inside for passengers and is a much more comfortable and practical choice. It's also Saab's safest car probably. It is much more advanced and refined compared to previous generations of Saabs. It's a clean start coming from the 9000, sort of like the 93ss is a clean start from the 93/ng900 family.

As far as DIY aspects, 4cyl engine is pretty easy to get to basic things on (like changing plugs, DI module, etc..) Oil filter is in a great location, it's got the T7 ECU, so it's not really made for tweeking, but such options are available. I put snow tires on it this winter, and it's a good match for the classic 900 in snow, except I prefer the non-ABS non-TC of my 88 900T. I still like and keep my classics, but the 9-5 is a great car.
