I work for an ambulance manufacturer. In the "old days" of gasoline ambulances we used to have problems with vapor lock. This can affect cars, too, but I'm not sure to what extent based on the design.

If the fuel tank system is not vented properly, gas builds up and creates a pressure situation whereby the fuel will no longer flow. When the engine / fuel system cools down (and the gas becomes cool) the vehicle starts and runs normally. The vehicle could be driving down the road all fat, dumb and happy and suddenly it stops running. Sometimes a jammed fuel filler cap could cause this.

I had an Alfa Romeo Spider with the same problem, although in that car it did not lead to engine shutoff. My fuel cap was not venting properly and when I removed it after driving there was extreme pressure inside. I was always worried about the tank exloding from pressure so I drove around with the cap loose (never had time to dig into this and solve it before I sold the car). Some cars have a vent not in the cap but elsewhere in the fuel filler or tank. I'm not familiar enough with Saab's system to say what it does or doesn't have...hopefully someone else can comment and add some more info if this is applicable.
