80/90 wt gear oil is the same viscosity as straight 30 wt motor oil, so it's not surprising that it's tough to shift in the cold! I'd simply dump the gear oil & replace it with whatever you want.
Based on my recent tranny fluid experiments, I'd suggest going to either Shell's Rotella 5W-40 motor oil or one of the new "High Mileage" motor oils. Also, Alex C has been having fantastic results with Schaeffer's Supreme syn blend in his tranny.
This tranny is a huge heat sink for the engine, so you definitely want something that can handle high heat loads w/o breaking down. That's motor oil.
