your 86's front seats bolt in with a couple hex bolts on driver's side, maybe 4 on pass. side.

from memory, to strip down for carpet removal: remove trim between seats, remove cubby beneath knee bolster (be careful/patient with it), disconnect stereo equipment wiring, remove front seats, remove back seat (held in with two washers that grab a pin (sorry, dunno technical term), remove kick strips, remove strips that run up the vertical edge of front door, remove rear interior panels, etc. i'm sure i'm forgetting some other stuff but, really, this is not rocket science.

if you've had a leak for awhile, take out the sound deadening stuff, clean/disinfect/dry, then wash floor with something to also clean/disinfect; having a wet/dry shop vac comes in very handy here.

as for the leak, if you have a hatchback, the water can be coming in from the rubber seal around a quarter window in back & then moves up to front foot area (the rubber shrinks w/age & pulls from the car body;~$50, dealer-only item). could also be coming in from the door seal. test with a garden hose -- have a helper spray while you're inside sleuthing. click on my name & search my old posts & the threads i've contributed on the topic for more info on leaks. there are other suspects...

as for cleaning the carpet, you can rent an upholstery steam cleaner for an afternoon (do the seats, too). note that "steam cleaner" is a misnomer -- they don't actually use steam. so use some hot hot water for best results.

do this when you have plenty of time to deal with drying everything completely.
