In addition to MS's good tip, you might check out the shift guide pin at the bottom of the shift lever. Pull off the boot and you will see 3 screws to remove in order to lift up the shift rod. If they are loose, that could be your problem. But if not, remove the shift rod to check the guide pin.
At the bottom of the rod, you will see a pin that rides in slots/grooves in a shifter plate below. Often the pin gets bent or a piece gets snapped off at the end when people force the shifter into reverse without pulling the collar. This pin should extend 22mm. It is threaded for easy adjustment. Pull out the wire clip just above the fluted knob and you can then adjust the pin.
