You definitely want to follow the advice of the others & make sure everything's aligned/adjusted correctly & that nothing's broken.
After all of that, if the problem persists, it may be as simple as "too much crud" in the tranny. The link describes part of my 5th gear travails. Shifting is now excellent on this car. I'm convinced that the heat from the engine & the clutch blocking cooling airflow is what causes most of the crud to form in these trannies, killing them early. (When I Auto-Rx'd the tranny our "new" '85 C900, the 30,000-mile-old 10W-30 drained out quite dark.)
I can assure you that I don't plan on ever going back to gear oil in any C900 tranny I own. Are you in the UK? If so, see if the Saab 5W-30 semi-syn motor oil is ACEA A3 rated. This would be my first choice for tranny oil in these cars. Otherwise, after a good clean out, I'd recommend Shell's Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 motor oil & either 20,000 mile or 30,000 mile changes (whichever you feel most comfortable with).
