leaking coolant -- water pump?

Hi,
My 1984 900 S is leaking a lot of coolant from the area of the water pump. Belt is also occasionally squeeling and pump seems to makes occasional "scraping" noise.
Problem history: cooling fans stopped working a few weeks ago. I swapped the horn relay for the cooling fan relay and horn didn't work, so a bad relay was problem #1. Shortly thereafter, I started slowly losing coolant and it has recently turned into a steady drip, drip, drip. Can't ID exact source, but definitely around water pump.
I've read in the archives that a water pump can be a good DIY job, but I also have an appointment for my local Saab indie mechanice to take a look next week.
One question I have is: as long as I keep the coolant reservoir topped off, watch the water temp. gauge, and don't take any long drives, do I risk head gasket or other major engine damage over the next week or so until my mechanic or I replace the water pump?
Of course, I'm hoping it's only hoses/clamps and belts. But I'm prepared for worse...
Thanks,
-jw
