question/advice about Shelby wheels (long...) Posted by kenS [Email] (#606) [Profile/Gallery] (more from kenS) on Fri, 9 Apr 2004 10:39:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
car is a 1987T 900, that's with the (old) 4x114.3 lug nuts and vented front disks, with ebrakes on the front. I managed to get hold of a very nice set of old Shelby 7-spoke goldvanes, in good shape, just need some refinishing. So, before I start fixing them up, I tried test-mounting them. The problem is that the clearance between the back vanes of the wheel and the outside floating caliper of the front disk brake is pretty tight. Nothing is hitting or scraping, but the caliper clears the rotating wheel by only about 5 or 6 mm. The stock "manhole" wheels have a different backside shape, and they clear the caliper by 9 or 10mm. The question is, is this going to be a problem? Under power, is anything likely to flex enough to make contact with the caliper mechanism? I know that the Shelby wheels were first available in the early 80's, before Saab went to vented front disks--- is the problem that the vented disk assembly is significantly wider than the original non-vented assembly? Has anyone out there used Shelby's with vented front disks?
