My son has run his '91 BMW 318i for several years with some wheels (on the back only0 off his old '79 320i which only clear the calipers by about 2.5 mm, and had no problems. On the other hand, if a wheel bearing goes bad or someone fails to tighten the lug bolts properly, you will have less chance to correct the problem before something is ruined.
