That mystery strip is to hold your top in the correct position. All conv. have a measurment from the factory for the rear bow height, probably from back center of well opening to center of bow. The pads set bow height. When top is installed, it is fastened to that bow with staples so top will not move over time & cause gaps where rear curtain (back glass) & top itself overlap each other. The vinyl that the top is made from will overcome the pads & shift over time(Shrinks). With a air staple gun & 1/2 or 5/8'' staples you can try to restaple strip back down. If that doesn't hold you will need to go any trim supply shop & buy new hide-em strip, remove front half of top & replace tack strip in rear bow. Hope this explains.
