Pretty much a follow up to Grant's comment. In '84 Saab went to a breakerless ignition. That's a Hall effect sensor in the distributor and an ignition amplifier mounted on the left fender. Since you've replaced the distributor and it didn't fix the problem, it's probably not the Hall effect. My guess, it's the ignition amplifier. If you crank the engine and the tach needle isn't moving (when it doesn't start), then it's one of the two.
I'd replace the ignition amplifier. Depending on brand, they can run $50-$120. I'd find a $50 unit - check the sponsors. You want to install it with thermal grease - that's an electrically insulating but thermally conductive grease between it and the fender. The folks selling the Amplifier probably sell it too, or you can pick it up at a Radio Shack - it goes by the name of Heat Sink Grease. If you don't use it, the amplifier can't pump enough heat out to the fender, and it'll overheat and die sooner.
