Bork, like bkoeth says if you want one-piece headlights you can convert to the model year 87+, *or* do what the engineers wanted in the first place and buy some e-code lamps (european spec, also one piece, have a vertical flat face rather than the 87+ slanted flat face). Sadly, saab put in crummy lights while trying to comply w/ US DOT regs (e-code doesn't qualify for silly beaurocratic reasons). But, it *is* legal to put them on after-sale :o)

To do the e-codes, you keep the existing turn signals and keep the bull-nose, flat front look you have now, looks great. The lamps reflector puts out a much different pattern, and if aimed properly is better (note also you can aim these yourself easily, instead of pay the shop to do it as with the DOT lights you have now). You can also use considerably higher wattage bulbs, too, though this does require you to replace the existing wiring and relay system w/ heavier gear.

I have had cars w/ all three versions: pre 87, 87+, and e-code. In my opinion, the pre 87 are dangerously awful by modern standards, the 87+ are merely OK, and the e-code are a quantum leap (i have the 90/100W, not fair comparison). I can't see spending my time/$ retrofitting to the 87+ for the little benefit, though the used parts can't cost all that much. The e-codes will cost you about 225USD each, but gosh is it nice.
