I did this just recently. What you need to do is remove the plastic panel underneath the steering wheel, there are two screws up top and a plastic fastener underneath. (The screws also hold the top of the frame that the switches attach to in place.) It is not necessary to remove the steering wheel, to get at these, though you may have to turn it one way and then the other for access.
With the plastic panel off you will see the metal frame holding the turn signal and windshield wiper switches. It's held in place by two torx screws underneath. Remove these and the whole assembly comes out easily, then you can get at the screws holding the switches in place.
If there's a cruise control involved, the factory replacement for the older (pre-89 I think) 900s involves a wiring change.
