Well, first, to clarify, an SPG is a just trim level for the "classic" or "old gen" 900 Turbo. What you get with an SPG (87 and newer) are the sporty body panels, 3-spoke rims, slightly more horsepower, lower/stiffer springs/shocks, leather interior, and maybe a couple other interior accoutrements, AKA doodads.
Second, Saab 900s are not Hondas or Toyotas, but they can be quite reliable if well-maintained. And they are quite fun to drive, practical, and safe.
Third, the SPG trim line was discontinued after '91, so if someone is selling a '93, it's not a true SPG. Purists are offended by this; personally, I couldn't give a rat's patooty (see 1st paragraph--it's just a fancy trim level...). Also note that convertible 900 Turbos with SPG trim are not true SPGs--they came with standard suspension and power level.
Transmissions are the weak link on these cars. IMO, any of the three for sale with a re-built gearbox is going to be worth more than those on the original given similar mileage/condition. Also, 89 and newer cars have an improved design; however, they still crap out. When they do, the engine must be removed (gearbox is bolted to the bottom of it); you can easily exceed 3 grand on a tranny. If you get one, have the gear oil changed every 6-12 months; it's cheap insurance.
A second factor would be repair records; the more anal retentive the prior owner, the better. :-)
From the factory, the '90 will have been the fastest car, and has a smaller turbocharger, which gives you quicker boost. 90+ cars also have ABS and a driver's side airbag. I believe the '88 has passive seatbelts; these are prone to dying and are a pain the butt. My car has them and I can't stand 'em. They can be removed and non-passives put in.
Last, if you decide to buy one, spend the $100 to have a Saab *specialist* do a buyer's inspection; tell your current mechanic no offense, but take it to someone who works on these cars exclusively. Yes, it's a car, and cars are all similar, but Saab put the motors in *backwards*, for Pete's sake--they're different enough that you want someone who knows what's what to give you the low-down.
If no one suggests a Bay area mechanic here, go to the General Board and post--someone will point you in the right direction...
