i think it was relocated from the engine bay on the 8v engines due to space and routing issues...
just took off a filter last weekend that was incredibly crusty, and got a good tip from another poster - the filter wants to move in that bracket while you are reefing on the bolts, so he suggested putting one wrench against the car and reefing on the other one. soon as i did that, BINGO off it came.
the other thing is, get the filter out of that bracket and you can easier access the outside bolt..i think one was 17 mm and one was 15 mm, and an adjustable wrench on thefilter itself...
