Steering Rack Replacement Story (long)

Hi Good Friends,
First I would like to thank everyone who responded to my original post appealing for immediate help/rescue concerning rack removal and replacement-welldone! Here are some thoughts and observations.
I had the luxury to use my Aunts' garage "pit" that is very much like the pits at oil change places. I would like to say that the best tip that I received was the one where you remove the rack retaining bolts so that you can move the rack around to gain the clearance you need to remove the nasty little fittings that are so neatly tucked up against the firewall. I was able to use an ordinary 18mm wrench without resorting to a stubby.
My rack was leaking profusively at the junction of the spindle shaft where the u-joint of the steering column joins. I am now convinced that I myself accelerated the failure of this seal when I removed the engine and cleaned out the engine compartment with degreaser (thoroughly degreasing this vital area) which allowed the elements to enter in. After observing that the new rebuilt maval rack was packed with grease around this shaft I concluded that they are onto something. So possibly as a preventitive I would recommed that everyone pack this area with a protective layer of grease!
I would also like to give high marks to a Saabnet sponser eEuroparts.com for a great price, free shipping and a perfectly filled order.
My sympathy to anyone either tackling this job alone or under jackstands (or anyone doing this the first time).
Much success to all,
Vitas
