Hey all....

Yeah, so I'm getting fed up with the whine coming from my '89 900 turbo 5-speed. i can't figure out if it's a turbo whistle that's just gotten out of hand....or gear noise.....or this dreaded pinion bearing thing everyone keeps talking about.

bear in mind that my car has a mild, self-tweaked APC box....nothing serious, just a little pot turning. maybe that's what did it.

anyway, here are my symptoms:
- under acceleration, there is a loud, almost screaming noise that increases in pitch depending on engine speed and stops between shifts.

- i can't duplicate the noise with the car standing still by revving the engine, only happens when it's moving.

- if i release the accelerator and let the engine brake the car, or if i downshift without using the accelerator to match up the meshing gear speeds, the noise happens the other way.....starts high, decreases in pitch.

- once i'm at speed, there isnt any noise, but if i put the pedal to the floor, the sound increases again, but not as severely. (i think that part of it is just normal turbo noise)

so. sounds more and more like a trans problem to me, so what can i do about it? or am i just totally screwed? i'm currently running quaker state 10W-30 in the engine and mobil 10W-30 in the trans.....should i dump these for heavier oils? should i try changing the trans oil? i havent done that in the year or so i've had this car, maybe thats it? being only 19 and a broke college student, i would LOVE to avoid enormous repair bills if possible. but such are the joys of owning one of these goofy ass cars, right??

thanks for your input!
